Bill’s Story of Hospice, Walking, and Connection
The annual Hike for Hospice is more than a fundraiser; it’s a chance to honour loved ones, connect with others, and support Rotary Hospice. For Bill, walking became a source of comfort after losing his wife, Lynn.
“My connection to Rotary Hospice started with my wife, Lynn. Back when the hospice was just getting established, she helped with the bookkeeping. It was a paid position, but she always liked to volunteer, so she donated the money back. Being part of hospice meant a lot to her.”
For Bill and Lynn, Hike for Hospice has been a tradition, whether joining the local walk or creating their own adventure. “One year, visiting Prince Edward Island, we packed up the car, drove to the waterfront, and just started walking. It was a beautiful day, blue sky, cool but not cold. We followed the boardwalk, wandered down side streets, and stopped whenever we felt like it. By that time, Lynn couldn’t walk far, so we took breaks, had lunch and COWS ice cream by the water. It became a really special day.”
When Lynn’s cancer progressed, she chose hospice, and Bill found relief in simply being present with her.
“At home, I was trying to do everything—helping her move, helping her to the washroom, worrying constantly.
At hospice, that changed. I could just sit with her, talk, and be there.”
After Lynn passed, Bill joined the Rotary Hospice Steps for Support walking group, discovering friendship, healing, and purpose.
“Through these walks, I realized something important: helping others helps you too. Walking became a way to honour Lynn, stay connected, and give back. That’s why I support Hike. Every step is a chance to remember, to connect, and to make a difference.”
Join Bill and walk, share, support, and honour someone you love along the way.
